Neil Armstrong Portrait Sculpture at Purdue University

Site Specific Sculpture, Bronze Relief

All graphics by Brad Bourgoyne, created from my design sketches and clay model.

At left is my small portrait model of Neil Armstrong (first man to walk on the Moon) as he looked when he was a student attending Purdue University.

I created the clay model and the design below for the new Neil Armstrong Hall of Engineering being built at Purdue.

At left is my design for the shape of the granite base, the three bronze relief panels detailing Armstrong's illustrious career, and graphic representation of the one and quarter life size, full-figure bronze portrait of Neil Armstrong.

These wonderful graphics of my design lets the client see how the finished one and a half times life size bronze sculpture and base would appear once installed at the building site.

In this sculptural design for Purdue University, my objective was to emote a very natural portrait of Neil Armstrong as a student at Purdue in the 1950's, while the bronze relief panels share a glimpse of the incredible future which awaits him.

The elegant shape of the base references flight, as does the angle of the building's roof design.

The bronze portrait of Mr. Armstrong is shown stepping up the base's elevation symbolizing the advance in his career through higher education at Purdue.

These steps forward scholastically enabled him to take that first step onto the Moon and,.... "one giant leap for mankind."
